A craps Hardway bet wins only when 4, 6, 8 or 10 appears as a matching pair before either an easy combination of the same total or 7. For example, hard 8 is 4+4. An easy 8 such as 3+5 loses the hard 8 wager even though the total is still 8.
Check the opened table before committing money. Hardway payouts and working rules can vary. This is general craps education; it does not claim that a particular Lotwin craps table, Hardway paytable, stake, provider or feature is currently available.
Check five details before placing a Hardway bet
Open the rules or paytable and confirm:
- Which hard total is selected? Hard 4, 6, 8 and 10 are separate wagers.
- Which matching pair wins? Hard 4 is 2+2, hard 6 is 3+3, hard 8 is 4+4 and hard 10 is 5+5.
- Which easy combinations lose? Any non-pair combination of the selected total commonly ends the wager as a loss.
- Does 7 also lose? Under common rules, 7 ends an unresolved Hardway wager as a loss.
- What profit payout is displayed? Do not assume another table's ratio or confuse profit with total return.
The Craps Learn hub explains the wider game sequence. The Field-bet guide covers a one-roll group of totals, while the Place-bet guide covers one selected number before 7. Neither is another name for a Hardway bet.
Match each hard total to its winning pair
| Hardway wager | Matching pair that wins | Easy combinations of the same total | Common profit payout |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hard 4 | 2+2 | 1+3, 3+1 | 7:1 |
| Hard 6 | 3+3 | 1+5, 5+1, 2+4, 4+2 | 9:1 |
| Hard 8 | 4+4 | 2+6, 6+2, 3+5, 5+3 | 9:1 |
| Hard 10 | 5+5 | 4+6, 6+4 | 7:1 |
These are common examples, not a universal paytable. Some tables display different ratios or describe when the wager is active. The opened rules are authoritative.
Separate stake, profit and total return
Suppose the stake is ₦100:
- at 7:1, profit is ₦700 and total returned is ₦800;
- at 9:1, profit is ₦900 and total returned is ₦1,000.
Use these formulas:
profit = stake × displayed profit ratio
total returned = original stake + profit
A displayed 9:1 payout does not mean the total return is nine times the stake. Under a profit-ratio convention, the original stake is returned in addition to the nine units of profit. If the interface uses different wording, check its settlement example before relying on the calculation.
Understand the resolving combinations
Two fair dice have 36 equally likely ordered outcomes. A matching pair has one combination. The selected easy total and 7 provide the common losing combinations:
- Hard 4 or hard 10: one winning pair, two easy combinations and six combinations for 7. Among the nine combinations that resolve the wager, one wins and eight lose.
- Hard 6 or hard 8: one winning pair, four easy combinations and six combinations for 7. Among the eleven combinations that resolve the wager, one wins and ten lose.
At common 7:1 and 9:1 profit payouts, the calculated long-run house edges are:
| Wager | Stated profit payout | Calculated house edge under this ruleset |
|---|---|---|
| Hard 4 or hard 10 | 7:1 | 11.11% |
| Hard 6 or hard 8 | 9:1 | 9.09% |
These figures assume the stated resolving combinations and payouts. A changed paytable or rule changes the calculation. The casino maths hub explains why probability and house edge describe repeated play rather than predict the next roll.
Check whether the wager is working
A Hardway wager may remain unresolved across several rolls, but it only has an effect while it is working. Before the dice are resolved, look for:
- the selected hard total and accepted stake;
- an on/off or working indicator;
- the rule for come-out rolls;
- the point at which changes stop being accepted;
- a transaction or bet-history record after settlement.
A chip or graphic still shown on the layout does not by itself prove that the wager is active. If the state is unclear, do not add another stake to test it. Pause and use the rules or help view.
Do not confuse a large payout with a likely result
The displayed payout is larger because only one matching pair wins, while several combinations lose. It does not make the pair more likely and does not create a prediction method. Previous rolls do not make a hard combination due.
Before deciding, compare the displayed payout, the losing conditions, the number of resolving combinations and the total amount at risk. If the rule or settlement is unclear, skip the wager.
Keep a minimal settlement record
If a result appears inconsistent with the displayed rule, record only what is needed:
- table or game name and provider shown in the interface;
- selected hard total and accepted stake;
- displayed paytable and working state;
- dice result, timestamp and round reference where available;
- transaction-history result.
Do not share passwords, one-time codes, full payment credentials or identity documents in screenshots. Use the operator's verified support route rather than a contact supplied through an unsolicited message.
Use Hardways as entertainment, not a recovery plan
Hardways carry a substantial mathematical disadvantage under the common rules above. A larger displayed payout does not recover previous losses or make the next pair predictable. Set a spending and time limit before play, never chase a loss with a larger proposition wager, and stop if gambling is causing financial or emotional harm. The Responsible Play page provides limit-setting and support guidance.
