Blackjack Hard Hands vs Soft Hands: A Simple Decision Guide

A hard blackjack hand has no Ace currently counted as 11. A soft hand has an Ace counted as 11 without taking the total above 21. The distinction matters because a soft hand can usually take one more card without busting: if necessary, the Ace changes from 11 to 1.

For example, Ace-6 is soft 17 because the Ace counts as 11. If that hand draws a 10, the Ace changes to 1 and the new total is hard 17 rather than 27. By contrast, 10-7 is already hard 17; drawing any card worth 5 or more would bust it.

How do you identify a hard hand?

A hand is hard when either of these conditions is true:

  • it contains no Ace; or
  • every Ace must count as 1 to keep the total at 21 or below.

Examples include 10-6 (hard 16), Ace-5-10 (hard 16) and Ace-Ace-9-9 (hard 20). The word “hard” describes how the Ace is valued, not whether the decision is difficult.

How do you identify a soft hand?

A hand is soft when it contains an Ace that can still count as 11 without busting the hand. Examples include Ace-2 (soft 13), Ace-6 (soft 17) and Ace-3-3 (soft 17).

The total is flexible. After another card arrives, the Ace may remain 11 or fall to 1. This flexibility is why strategy charts separate soft totals from hard totals even when the displayed number is the same.

These examples explain hand values only. They do not tell you automatically whether to hit, stand, double or split.

Why can the same total have a different decision?

Hard 17 and soft 17 both display 17, but they do not have the same draw risk. Hard 17 can bust on the next card; soft 17 cannot bust on a single additional card because the Ace can change to 1. A rules-matched strategy chart therefore places hard and soft hands in separate sections.

What about pairs and more than one Ace?

Pairs are often shown in a third strategy-chart section because splitting may be available. A pair of Aces starts as soft 12 before any split decision. If the hand is not split and receives another card, value every Ace in the combination so the highest total at or below 21 is used.

With multiple Aces, only one Ace can count as 11 without immediately adding at least 22 from two Aces. For Ace-Ace-6, one Ace counts as 11 and the other as 1, making soft 18.

Quick hand-classification checklist

  1. Add the non-Ace cards.
  2. Count every Ace as 1.
  3. If adding 10 for one Ace keeps the total at 21 or below, the hand is soft.
  4. If no Ace can be upgraded from 1 to 11, the hand is hard.
  5. Check the pair section separately when the first two cards have the same rank and splitting is offered.
