In standard Punto Banco baccarat, neither the player nor the dealer chooses whether the Player or Banker hand takes a third card. A fixed drawing table decides. First check for a natural 8 or 9, then apply the Player rule, and only then apply the Banker rule.
The key point is that Player's third card can change what Banker must do. The words Player and Banker are hand labels; they do not show who controls the draw.
Step 1: check for a natural
Baccarat card values use only the final digit of the total. Aces count as 1, cards 2–9 use face value, and tens, Jacks, Queens and Kings count as 0. An initial two-card total of 8 or 9 is a natural. Under the standard Punto Banco rules described here, both hands then stand and the higher total wins.
If neither hand has a natural, continue to the Player rule.
Step 2: apply the Player rule
The Player hand follows this fixed rule:

If Player stands on 6 or 7, Banker draws on 0–5 and stands on 6–7. If Player draws, the value of that third card determines parts of the Banker chart below.
Step 3: apply the Banker rule
When Player has drawn a third card, use the following standard table. “Draw” means Banker receives a third card; every unlisted combination stands.

Here, a third-card value of 0 means a 10, Jack, Queen or King. The chart uses card value, not the card's printed rank.
A compact way to remember the sequence
- Stop if either initial hand is a natural 8 or 9.
- Player draws on 0–5 and stands on 6–7.
- If Player stands, Banker draws on 0–5 and stands on 6–7.
- If Player draws, read Banker's total against Player's third-card value in the interaction chart.
This is a reading aid, not a betting system. The software or dealer applies the rule automatically.
Worked examples
Example 1: Banker 3 against a Player third-card 8
Player starts with 5, so Player draws. The third card is an 8. Banker has 3. The chart's exception says Banker stands when its total is 3 and Player's third card is 8.
Example 2: Banker 4 against a Player third-card 6
Player draws and receives a 6. Banker has 4. Because a Banker 4 draws against Player third-card values 2–7, Banker takes a third card.
Example 3: Banker 6 against a Player third-card 5
Player draws and receives a 5. Banker has 6. Banker draws only against a Player third-card 6 or 7, so Banker stands.
Example 4: Player stands
Player's first two cards total 7, so Player stands. Banker totals 5. Because Player did not draw, use the simpler stand branch: Banker draws on 0–5.
What does a baccarat player actually decide?
In Punto Banco, the drawing decisions are fixed. A person normally chooses whether to wager on Player, Banker or Tie, how much to risk, or not to play.
