What is Punto Banco baccarat?
Punto Banco is a comparing-card game in which two labelled hands—Player and Banker—are dealt under fixed rules. The labels do not mean that the person wagering controls the Player hand or that the casino is the Banker hand. Before the deal, a wager is normally placed on Player, Banker or Tie.
The drawing procedure is automatic. There is no decision to hit or stand. A lower house edge on one standard main bet does not predict the next hand and does not turn baccarat into a source of income.
Card values and hand totals
Aces count as 1, cards 2–9 use face value, and tens and picture cards count as 0. Add the card values and keep only the final digit. A 7 and 8 total 15, so the baccarat value is 5. The highest possible value is 9.
An initial two-card 8 or 9 is a natural and normally ends the drawing process. Otherwise, the standard Punto Banco drawing table determines whether a third card is dealt:
- Player draws on totals 0–5 and stands on 6–7.
- Banker action depends on the Banker total and, when Player drew, the value of Player's third card.
The dealer or software applies the full table. Players do not choose whether either hand draws.
Main bets and rule-dependent figures
A common commission Punto Banco paytable uses:

These figures apply to that ruleset. A Tie paying 9:1 has a different edge. No-commission baccarat changes the payout on specified Banker outcomes, so its mathematics must be read from that table's rules. Side bets also have separate paytables and probabilities.
The standard commission Banker wager has the lowest house edge of the three main bets, but “lowest” means a smaller long-run disadvantage—not a guaranteed or universally correct bet. One hand can still lose, and a different variant can change the figures.
Variants to distinguish
Mini baccarat usually changes table size, dealing procedure or pace rather than the core Punto Banco drawing rules. It does not imply a fixed low minimum stake.
Speed baccarat shortens the time between decisions and results. Round duration, host type and availability vary by product.
No-commission baccarat removes the usual commission but changes one or more Banker payouts. Read the exact treatment of a Banker 6 and any other exception.
Squeeze baccarat changes presentation by revealing cards more slowly. Presentation does not change the standard probabilities unless the displayed rules also change.
